Words of Wisdom from Small Business Owners

May 15, 2023

They say that “experience is the mother or father of wisdom,” and, in small business ownership, the saying runs true.

Entrepreneurs are always working tirelessly to bring their dream to life. They tend to dive in headfirst and, while they may encounter challenges, obstacles, or even make some mistakes along the way…they also gain some incredible wisdom and knowledge.

Here are a few valuable words of wisdom – from the mouths of local small business owners themselves!

Hire quality people that fit your culture. Don’t hire the smartest and brightest if they don’t come with the culture you want. A business is only as good as it’s people.”

– Jeff Shipley, Keller Williams Inspire Realty (Fargo, ND)

Listen to others. It’s important to surround yourself with people who have been there from their perspective area of expertise. Whether it’s an account, a banker, or a bartender, these people have valuable pieces of advice to share.

– Kent Bloms, The Original Bar and Nightclub (Minot, ND)

Don’t be afraid to give your goal or dream a shot.”

– Audrey Kankelfritz, Lawn Improvement (Fargo, ND)

“Know and understand your numbers. Whether you’re starting out, buying a business, or working to acquire one, 90% of your time needs to be in taking a firm evaluation of your financials so you know where you are and where you’re going.”

– Shawn Markman, Katabatic Brewing (Livingston, MT)

Don’t stop if you hear the word ‘no’ once or twice. You have to believe that there’s programs or people out there that can help you. Then, go find them.”

– Mitch Kost, Sport Clips (Bismarck, ND)

“Make the investment. There’s a lot of small businesses out there that seem to be dying because they won’t make the investment in new machines or whatever they need to expand and grow. You have to put yourself out there and hope for the best.”

– Joshua Lorenz, Mikkelsen Aggregates (Bottineau, ND)

“Network, ask questions, and share your story. There are so many people across the state that are willing to go out of their way to help you succeed.”

– Rob Hrabe, Mid-America Aerotech (West Fargo, ND)

“Put in the hard work. If you are willing to do what it takes to start or own a business, do it! The rewards are amazing.”

– Drs. Derek and Christy Fischer, Fischer Family Chiropractic (Williston, ND)

Understand the risk. Starting an owning a business can be scary. We had to put a lot of money in up front and there was a lot of work involved, but we were confident in our abilities and skills and knew that our community would support us. It was worth it.”

– Jerry Frye, Jerry’s Repair and Alignment (Minot, ND)

“You can’t plan enough. There will no doubt be barriers along the way, but continue to look at the problems and solutions will arise.”

– Dave and Anne Larson, Rustic Oaks (Fargo, ND)

Expanding or starting your own business takes a leap of faith. It is not for the faint of heart. It is unnerving. But if you’re willing to do that…it’s extremely rewarding.

– Cory Oberlander, Agveris and TruCore Fitness (Casselton, ND)

We are so proud of these entrepreneurs, along with the many others who serve our local communities.
